There also would likely have been a few stone buildings in the town, namely a small palace for the local lord and a community temple which would have resembled a small pyramid.

Most of the town's residents would have lived in wooden and thatch houses like the ones shown in the movie, but the walls would likely have been whitewashed in plaster and everything would have been much cleaner and more orderly. Most rural Maya were farmers and craftsmen who payed tribute to a local nobleman, who in turn payed tribute to a city-state king. For one, much of the land that is today rainforest would have been much more open in pre-Hispanic times. The idea that there could be a village of Mayan-speaking hunter-gatherers in the rain forest that have never heard of a city within walking distance of them is ridiculous. Whereas people more sympathetic to the film see it as a complex irony: the brutal and fanatical conquerors are about to have the tables turned on them in the worst way, and Jaguar Paw is smart enough to know he doesn't want to be caught in between a much more violent clash of civilizations than the one he's just narrowly escaped.Īll of that said, the decisions to film on location and in the Yucatec Maya language make the film completely unique, aside from its historical/archaeological accuracy.Īdding to this, what really bugs me is the "village" the protagonist is from.

People hostile to the movie take this to mean that Christianization was a good, necessary thing to tame the barbaric Mesoamerican cultures. There's also a general and quite heated disagreement about what the appearance of the Spanish ships off the coast at the end is meant to signify. There are dozens of smaller inaccuracies regarding temple architecture, timeline of the postclassic period and Spanish Conquest, etc. The Mayans did human sacrifice as well, but on a smaller scale, they revered victims as gods (so did the Aztecs in certain rituals), and they were more likely to toss you into a cenote than to carve your heart out. The Aztecs were into the mass sacrifice thing, ritual removal of the heart and offering it to heaven, ritual decapitation, etc. The consensus is that the Mayan sacrifices portrayed in the film are much closer to Aztec ritual practices. This came up in a more general thread about book/film accuracy a couple weeks ago. Previous AMAs | Previous Roundtables Featuresįeature posts are posted weekly.
